What is Art?
It’s kind of like asking someone, what is beauty? Or what is love? Whats the meaning of life? Well, what’s beautiful to me, is subjective. What does love feel like to me? Subjective. Life? Subjective. Art? Subjective.
So, if we’re going to try and be objective about it what sort of information do we cancel out? Personal taste seems like the “duh” thing to be taken out of the equation. But how you react to something is often so uncontrolled, so unintentional, so part of you that it is an automatic response. Judging art without your personal taste influencing you is difficult! Defining art for me is a task that will forever remained unanswered. Here is where I’m at.
For me art is everything. And I am perfectly confident in my opinion. I am not arrogant enough to say what I create as an artist is more beautiful than a leaf on a tree. It’s a question that as an artist you are bombarded with over and over and over again. Or you are subjected to people’s opinions of what is and isn’t art.
Your work is representational? Whats the point, why not just have a photograph. Your work is abstract? Anyone could do that! «< Neither of these are my opinions, they are simply thigns I have heard over and over again.
I don’t like heavy metal music. Really I can’t stand it. But holy hell batman, there isnt the slightest of possibilities that I would ever deny that it is music.
It is a subject my brain gets lost in. Because every direction you turn to something else pops up. Another question. Something else for you to consider.
What is art? What do you think?
Isn’t art the chair you’re sitting in? That’s craftsmanship
Isn’t art the t-shirt you’re wearing? That’s fashion.
Isn’t it the building your in right now? That’s architecture.
What about when you get your haircut, or put makeup on? When you walk out the front door and stroll past a garden. When you admire the pattern a footprint from a shoe has left behind. Or the painting on the wall you just dont understand. The terrible picture that to you sucks. The conceptual art that someone seems to have slapped together.
Just because you dont like it, doesnt make it any less artistic. Just because you dont understand doesnt change it from beign art to nothing.
Why do we even question what art is.
For me, it’s everything. But I want to know what everyone thinks.

These are two works I’ve been puttering away on. The pieces reference the Philadelphia Vireo, which is a type of small bird. The first piece is the written version of the birds call, the second is mimicking his feather colours/arrangement. Works in progress!
